Montrose Water Warriors

As some of you may know (or maybe you don't and this is the first you are hearing of this) we have a bit of a Water issue here in Montrose, MN.

We were recently advised that our water has higher levels of Manganese. Based on a letter that was written to us on 03/01/2021, between 3 Wells the Manganese concentration is 423 ppb to 1450 ppb. The recommended health guidelines are the following:

-If you have an infant who drinks tap water or drinks formula made with tap water, a safe level of manganese in your water is 100 ppb of manganese or less.
-If you have an infant who never drinks tap water or formula made with tap water, a safe level of manganese in your water is 300 ppb or less.
-If everyone in your household is more than one-year, a safe level of manganese in your water is 300 ppb or less.

As you can see, the above numbers show that for an infant who drinks tap water or formula made with tap water we are at almost 15 times- YES 15 TIMES the limit.  This is NOT good for our little ones at all!  It is not good for ANYONE really.

So maybe you are wondering "why is this a big deal"?  Well this is what prolonged exposure can do to children and/or adults....

Children and adults who drink water with high levels of manganese for a long time may have problems with memory, attention, and motor skills. Infants (babies under one year old) may develop learning and behavior problems if they drink water with too much manganese in it.

This is a BIG deal. These issues do not just resolve.

Our city is currently working on short term/long term options to reduce the Manganese levels. But this is by far, not going to be a quick fix.

The City has suggested we purchase a water filter pitcher or a filtering unit to attach to the faucet (they must be certified to remove manganese and filter media changed according to the manufactures recommended intervals), suggested working with a water treatment company such as Culligan, to install a point of use water system certified for manganese removal or bottled water.

We have asked the City about help with water and/or filtration systems for those that simply do not have the funds to obtain. They currently do not have it in the budget to provide it to us at this time. Hopefully they can look at the budget again and see if they can help us, but right now we need some help from you.

So how can you help?

We are looking for donations so that we may purchase Bottled Water/Supplies and if we gain enough funds, maybe some smaller filtration type items for those that are in desperate need.

We have many community members that have Babies/Small Children that just simply cannot afford another expense at this time. We also have community members that have compromised health that cannot spare any funds right now.

Water is something we need to survive. And often we take it for granted that we have water just across the room in our sink. For us, it is not that easy right now.

Any amount that you can spare would be greatly appreciated. 100% of funds donated goes to those desperately needing this water.

Thank you for your consideration.
