First Trip To A Museum

Hi, my name is Sylvie Bright, I am a teacher at Waikoloa Middle School. I am fundraising for airfares to Honolulu so that my 14 Global Scholars students may experience going to a museum. I had a grant for this, but the rules changed, and now I must come up with $1400 for us to go to Bishop Museum on Oahu. For 90% of my students, this will be the first time they ever experience going to a museum, as there are none on our island, and for some, it is the first time off-island. This year our focus in Global Scholars is "Water sustainability." Going to Bishop museum will help my students understand the way the ancient Hawaiians used the Ahupua'a system of watersheds and how that system is still relevant today. They will see ancient Hawaiian artifacts, learn about navigation systems, farming systems, and water conservation, and get hands experience at the adjacent science museum. I want to foster a love of learning and understanding that looking at the past will help us navigate future sustainable decisions, especially as we live on an island.
