My Dad's Random Paralysis (Gullian Barre Syndrome)

Hot Chocolate and Coffee for the Homeless 2019

Bahman Ali Khanmohammadi, my Father, has always been an active, adventurous, and generous man. Generous, with his time, his love, and his connections. He has always made time for giving and all he’s ever wanted is to make sure those he loves and everyone he meets is okay, and has their needs met. Every December since 2014, except for this past year of 2020, my Dad has consecutively organized and lead his Hot Chocolate and Coffee for the Homeless event. He stands outside in freezing cold temperatures with other friends and volunteers, handing out food, warm beverages, hats, gloves, jackets, and toiletries to those in need for hours outside of the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. With just the purest heart of gold, my Dad has always made an effort to do right by people and he’s always instilled in me the importance of being kind, compassionate and as generous as possible. Sadly, my Dad has recently been hospitalized with a very frightening condition known as Guillan Barre Syndrome. So now, this man who has always given to others, is in very much need himself.

One afternoon earlier this week, my Dad came home from a Ju Jitsu class feeling very achy and a lot of agony. Within an hour of being home he realized something was wrong and he needed to go to the hospital. After a long visit in the emergency room the doctors concluded he had a pinched nerve and he would heal up within a few days on steroids. At the end of his visit, my Dad began to lose mobility and sensation in his right leg, so we used a wheel chair to bring him home. To our surprise, in a matter of hours, my Dad experienced a sudden and nearly complete paralysis overnight. He woke up in the middle of the night very uncomfortable and realized he was not only unable to move his right leg but now his left leg and left arm, with the slightest lifting of his right arm, but barely, and he could not move his hands or fingertips. After many tests, the doctors confirmed he has Guillan Barre Syndrome (GBS), a condition in which the Body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. This syndrome is rare and affects the nerves that are responsible for muscle movement, transmission of pain, temperature, and touch sensations. My Dad has acute Guillan Barre Syndrome, which is even more rare and leads to a sudden early onset paralysis.

For his treatment he is being given multiple plasma transfusions over the course of two weeks in the hospital, and will have inpatient and outpatient treatment after that for several weeks.

Unfortunately, like many other Americans right now, my Father doesn’t have any medical insurance and the medical expenses for the treatment he is receiving will surely be more than we can handle. As a bartender, My Dad will not be able to work any time soon and his return has yet to be determined.

We would truly appreciate any donations possible to help get this very loved man back on his feet. We understand times are tough right now, so if you aren’t able to donate we would greatly appreciate a like and share of this link on any and all platforms!

(Also mailed cards are appreciated! DM for addy)

Thank you so much for your time, love to all and be well!
